Small Group Meeting – 20 Sep 2020

Thanks to those of you who were able to join today’s small group session. We did check-ins, recapped some recent genealogy events, did a couple of submitted document reviews, and did a review of our experiences browsing through letters sent and received in the Freedmens Bureau.

Next, we broke out into two separate groups (Green and Gold) for project work on the slave schedules and the mortality schedules for 1850 and 1860 in Carroll Parish, Louisiana. After some time, the groups came back together and reported out the following:

  • How thorough was the enumerator/marshal?
  • What were things that stood out to you as you reviewed the documents?
  • How can what you learned help you in your own project?

Our next small group will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2020 at 2pm Pacific/4pm Central/5pm Eastern.

Next assignment:

1. Browse the slave schedules and/or mortality schedules for your county or parish of interest.

Take note of the following – Slave Schedules

  • babies under 1 year of age
  • manumissions

  • enslaved people who were over 100 years old, with or without names

Take note of the following – Mortality Schedules
